The Houston Space Center

By:

When it comes to space exploration, what better place to bring the whole family than the Houston Space Center? Whether you have a crew of budding astronauts or just harbor an interest in space, science, or American History, do not miss this legendary landmark! If you are just passing through or decide to make Houston your main destination, be sure to stop at this great experience for learning, excitement, and fun!

The Houston Space Center offers a learning experience for both kids and adults alike. Children of all ages will find something to learn and explore space in Kids Space Place made for the budding astronauts. They will enjoy tons of hands-on activities just for kids, while they learn about space, science, and the importance of space exploration.

Age would not be a bar to enjoyment of the Space Center. You would also love the NASA tram tour, which offers exclusive insight of the Space Center. The Johnson Space Center also showcases the mission control that guided the space exploration programs of the earlier Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. Lucky ones among you might get to see actual astronauts training, but even so, you could always see the training facilities like Hanger X.

Learn about the men and women behind the space suits in the center’s Astronaut Gallery. Portraits of every U.S. astronaut are displayed, along with many space suits and tons of memorabilia. Don’t miss the moving memorial to the astronauts killed either in training or during the mission, including the crew of Apollo One, Challenger, and the recent Columbia disasters.

The Feel of Space actually gives you the feel of what it would be like to live, sleep, and work in space. Through this interactive presentation you can see how the astronauts live while in outer space, while a Mission Briefing Officer tells you secrets and answers any questions. You can experience landing an orbiter, exploring the shuttle, or even retrieving a wayward satellite!

Visit the Space Center Theater and see the history of space flight on the big screen! From President Kennedy’s daring goal to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade to Neil Armstrong’s classic first line, “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The five-storey screen presents history in bigger than life form, allowing visitors of all ages to transport back through history and propel them into the future of space exploration.

The Blast Off Theater puts visitors in the center of the action as a space shuttle departs for the international space station. It also offers several different movies and experiences suitable for kids and adults. You can see what goes on behind the scenes during liftoff and the flurry of activity in mission control and mission status center.

The Houston Space Center is not to be missed if you are in its neighborhood. Shop at the Space Trader and purchase some mementoes of your trip for fond memories for you and your family. You would be amazed at what you can buy at the Space Trader-astronaut ice-cream, reproductions of newspapers commemorating important events in space explorations like landing on the moon-just to name a few! School groups and family all would find the visit a great fun-filled learning experience. Just 25 miles south of Houston, the Houston Space Center is waiting to be explored by you and your family.
