Sunscreen or Sunblock - Do We Cover Up or Not?

By: Carla

Riding in hot weather and proper motorcycle attire may not be your first choice. It is especially difficult in the heat of day. Dressing down to a tank top or halter top for the ladies is popular.
Not all skin is created equal however, and there are those who need to consider making choices to protect the skin. As the ozone layer continues to diminish, bringing awareness to the dangers of UVA and UVB rays, could save a life. Wearing a sunblock unfortunately, clogs the pores and the effects are uncomfortable as well as unpleasant. The more expensive brands of sunscreen are not as thick and heavy and have moderate to high SPF (sun protection factor) which makes it a bit more bearable. Sunblock designed specifically for the face that contain zinc provide great protection. The last thing we want is to wear sunscreen that mixes with our sweat, gets in our eyes and burns while we are trying to maneuver through traffic. No matter, if you do slop on sunscreen, at the end of the day the accumulation of road dirt and sweat will be thick and heavy. Some studies have been made that indicate sunblock when applied to the skin, may be harmful for our general health. The question was asked to a Dermatologist, and her answer was "Choices are few, we need to protect our skin. Either wear sunblock, sunscreen or cover up". Protecting our skin from the elements is a responsibility that must be taken seriously.
